I don't know if this answers your question, but I'll give you an example. In my last relationship I started writing letters to the guy. He was away, had inconsistent email/telelphone access. It was actually very romantic to send and receive written correspondance. I took the initiative and we both got into it. I don't know many people who do that anymore but it was so much better than email and it did require dedication by both parties.
