My wife (who was 53 at the time) had surgery for bunions in Oct 2005. There's at least two types of surgery, one where they just shave off the bunion, and a second where the cut the bones and realign them using screws. My wife had the second. She was off her feet entirely for a week or two, and on crutches until mid-January 2006. Her foot still hurt some until July or August. She says that her foot still feels odd, and that her toes don't bend due to the screw that was used to tie the bones back together.
