actually there are very stringent rules about this. There are companies like Cityharvest who pick up left over catering etc, but because homeless and hungry are people they also attract lawyers and there's the potential for lawsuits. I see lots of food tossed away but again it's a shame.
Also, the companies have to keep a standard for their foodstuffs. Even if it's not fit for sale, it means it also isn't fit for represntation of their brand name.
