A nettle is a plant which has lots of small hollow hairs (needles) filled with acid. I am pretty sure it is formic acid, but I am not positive. When you brush up against a nettle, the hairs stick into your skin and break off, leaking the acid and causing pain and swelling. You are essentially left with hundreds of tiny thorns sticking in your skin which are too small to pull out and they all leak acid.

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dream with open eyes, to make it possible." Seven Pillars of Wisdom, T.E. Lawrence
