I'd make a run for it. Like it was said, what does he have to lose, he's going to spend a good chunk of his life in prison, might as well make a stab at it.
I wouldn't consider 52 to be old either, I think that's a good age in life, my parents are around this age and are still doing new things and getting ready for retirement (my dad will be 55 in a few weeks and retiring in the new year). Sure, thrown in prison for 20 years and you're 75 when you get out with not much left to look foward to. The chance that you'll survive prison is pretty good, they feed you, care for you and have excersise equipment, i'd be surprised if he died in jail at all.
If he made a run for it he would be leaving the majority of his family behind anyway and would not get a chance to see them for a long time if ever again. The FBI would be tracking their movements in an attempt to track him down and so contact with them would be risky. However, I think that having some sort of freedom in Mexico, or further south is worth it.
But then again, living in paranoid states of mind wondering if Uncle Sam is around the corner waiting for you... hmmmm
