I agree with you about Herzog's insertion of himself so much into this film. Overall, the film had the feeling that it turned into something, perhaps, inappropriately personal and almost cultish - considering his interaction with and (to me) over-the-top "performances" of the people who knew Treadwell. It is an odd film. But I see you found it strangely affecting, too.
I've always heard about
Spirit of the Beehive but have not seen it. I'm going to put in on my queue - sounds good.
