The invites exist so that the community can be ensured its new members will contribute. When I give somebody an invite, it puts my good status as a member on the line. I won't give invitations to people I don't know - that defeats the purpose of them, as well as putting myself at risk of being banned from the site.
That's why Moskie got the invite right away, and I would have given one to Mexican if I'd seen it (but he already got one.)
Which means: for those of you asking for one, I'll never give one if I don't know you. You might find someone else who is willing to, though, so you're welcome to ask. But if you contribute to TFP and seem like you're not a total idiot, I'd probably send one your way. So go enjoy this fantastic community, eh?
