Newport Beach - Walk around - have some food at Mutt Lynches and try the coldest beer you have ever had at the dive bar called "Blackies by the Sea" - right on the sand, a small bar - kind of a throw back. Ya gotta go. If you are setting up the towels - head west (to the right if you are facing the ocean) from Newport pier - walk up a few streets and get away from the crowds. Nice beach. Lifeguards if you need them. Water's clean.
Huntington Beach is way fun as well. A small town feel.
Be alert - and don't get too crazy - beach police are fairly strict. No alcohol or smoking allowed on the beach and they are out in force enforcing these rules.
