The most extravagant kitchen accessory we have bought is probably our kitchen-aid mixer. My wife really wanted one. She was very excited when she purchased it. She doesn't cook. So, I use it occasionally, and she uses it a couple times a year.
Cooking shows and cooking magazines really plant the idea that you need all sorts of fancy, limited use, cooking tools. Hmm... I want to make that but I have to buy a tartlett pan....Every recipe in Bon Appetite seems to require another tool that I don't have.
That said, a good chef's knife would be nice!
