You have to realize that the people who work at these stores don't really care what you do with your time. They are there to work and make money. I never went home and thought about all the people that rented porn.
When I worked there I actually had several women customers. Some of them would even ask me advice on stuff to buy or movies to rent.
Don't be afraid to go into the store. I've never known a clerk to judge a person for something they rent. Everything is completely confidential so even if they see you on the street they can't mention that they know you from the store.
If you are there to get a movie, I would recommend getting something from the "couples" movie section. They are more pleasant for females to watch.
Hope this helps!

Is it that you can physically peruse a wide selection of titles and products before making a selection? Is there something about the act of shopping at a porn shop that is lost in the internet experience?
Does anyone actually come into the shop "just to browse"? It seems to me that one would only go to a porn shop with a specific purchase in mind. The concept of an "porno impulse buy" seems a bit odd, but I wonder how common something like that is.

Personally I like getting porn from a sex store because then I can look at the cover and see what the movie actually involves. Some people may not want to store all that porn on their computer also. Maybe they use it for work purposes or they share it with their children.
You have to realize too that sex stores don't just sell movies. There are books, magazines, toys, lubricants, lingerie, and many other things.
I have had many people that come into the shop just to browse out of curiousity, and some actually buy stuff.

I've had some people come in who look a little freaked-out, usually those are men. I figure they probably just want to get in and get out and aren't in the mood to be friendly. I just ring their purchases through and let them be on their way.
Women, however, usually come in with their SO or with another woman and they tend to be very giggly. I usually try and make them feel more comfortable when I sense this because sometimes women are just looking for validation. Once they realize I'm not going to bite their head off they start to ask questions.

Actually I have a few funny stories regarding those questions. There was a man that came in and bought a $700 blow up doll and put it on his credit card. I was so thrilled because we usually got some sort of bonus for making a huge sale like that. A few months went by and I got a call from my boss who had a police man at the store. She was like, "Okay Amy you aren't in trouble but this police man needs to speak with you." I got sort of freaked out. He began to tell me that the credit card the man used to buy the expensive doll was a stolen card! He just asked for a description of the man. I felt really bad for my boss though having to deal with that!
There was one time I was training a new employee. She finally got to go on a shift by herself. I came in at the end of the day to see that everything was in order. I noticed that there was a huge fake vagina that had been stolen. I was like "how could you not notice someone stealing a vagina!?!?" I mean the thing was like massive. Needless to say she got in so much trouble by my boss, but luckily she didn't get fired.
I only had a problem one time with someone trying to steal on my shift. He put something in his coat and it set of the security system. So I asked him to open his bag...nothing there. Then I asked him to walk through again and it went off. I asked him to remove his coat. As he did his wife said something to me so I turned my head for a moment. He mysteriously then able to walk through without setting it off, so I let him go. Afterwards I walked back behind the counter where the cash register was and found a magazine that he had obviously thrown back there when I wasn't looking. The bugger did steal something after all and when he got caught he got rid of the evidence. I called the cops. They said they couldn't really do much because he didn't walk out of the store with the item. I just wrote a description of him down for the other employees and he wasn't allowed back in.
