I have picked up women that needed assistance, but the last one was on her way to a mental health clinic and she spooked me more than a little.
On the other hand, my car broke down on the freeway and I was hoofing it to the next phone miles away, when a man stopped to give me a lift. I was feeling very lucky until he wanted to make some other stops first, and one was his home. All was well in the end, but he scared the living daylight out of me.
I think the only reason I would pick up someone now is if children are involved.
