There hasn't been a season that I have watched hockey that didn't include Steve Yzerman. He was the reason I started watching and playing hockey as a six year old growing up in Flint, and the reason I continued to love hockey even after I realized I wasn't very good at it as a teenager. When I went to college, the first thing I did to decorate my room, much to the dismay of my Colorado fan roomate, was install my life size stand up of Yzerman right next to the tv. Then over the past few years, watching him still play well enough to be a top 6 forward, still with the fire of a champion in his eyes, and realizing he was doing it all on one leg, was amazing. And while I continue to love hockey, love living and dying with the Red Wings every season, I just know that I won't ever have the same emotional attachment to it all without the Captain around to will his team to victory. It's a sad day for my household, the Red Wings, and hockey in general.
on a less somber note, congrats on retirement Stevie, you've earned it many times over.
and as a horrific sidenote, Belfour is in town to talk contract with Holland. When it rains, it pours.
