ahem, back to the circle of light. Have you tried holding a piece of paper up against the wall over the circle of light? You could then move the paper away, keeping the circle of light on it to see where it came from.
If you have a laptop, it's fan may have turned on while you were away at lunch and blown warm air over your mouse and wrist pad. Or maybe someone was 'borrowing' your computer, and warmed the chair that way.
You mentioned that you have an AC vent below your desk at home. If the heat turned on, it could have possibly warmed the circle on your desk.
Maybe you were smelling pipe smoke. It could have come from outside, and your air vents could have caused the irregular smell distribution.
