Difficult to say if you haven't made any changes to the system configuration and it happens with files that previously played correctly.
Just to make sure, these files worked properly before?
What kind of system? (operating system, processor, video card)
Are these files on a hard drive or on a cd/dvd?
Did you quit other running applications?
Malware could contribute. You may have picked up something without knowing.
Check task manager to see if anything is hogging the CPU.
Did you change to a higher screen resolution?
