In my experience, the financial burden is more likely to teach a lesson than throwing them in jail for doing something stupid. They clearly didn't mean to inflict serious (meaning anything that wouldn't heal in a week or two) harm on anyone, and they pretty clearly weren't thinking. Spending 6+ month in jail (the usual minimum for felonies) could make good kids who made a mistake into hardened criminals. It's probably better if they have to pay a few thousand dollars over the next few years to their victims.
