You are gravely mistaken if it was a normal procedure to inspect computers and audit their doings. If it was another coworker looking to rat you out, yes, that's correct they have no right. BUT an authorized person does have that right.
Who is authorized? Your manager, HR, anyone above your manager.
Why? Because the company needs to protect itself from things like harassment, fraud, embezzelling, child porn, etc.
If your company happens to be a publicly traded company, Sarbanes-Oxley has even more in store for you.
