My mom used to cut my hair as a kid--entirely self-taught. But then she started getting hand tremors and we had more money, so I got to go to the salon. I've never had much luck with salon haircuts, as my hair is kind of tricky--curly at the back, straight towards the front, tremendous volume and LOTS of hair.
Right now I cut my own hair, because I'm poor and it's free. Hopefully soon I'll have enough money to go to the beauty school and get a real haircut--my hair needs to be razored to keep the volume down. I haven't had a real haircut since July, and that cut was awful. Oh, and yes, I am quite good at cutting hair--I cut my mom's hair, my best friend's hair, etc. So other people trust me with their hair
