In this case society is either going to hit you while you learn or hit you while you stagnate. You have a false sense of safety when you withdraw (I know because I can be like this too) but youre not really dodging the blow, you will be hit either way. There is suffering in life and you cannot escape it by running away. Once you realize you will be hit there is no longer a reason to worry about it, you can go on and do whatever you want without fear of getting hit, you will have transcended suffering.
