I gave up deodorant/anti-perspirant when I shifted to cotton or all-natural shirts, as onesnowyowl suggests. There's just not the smell one develops with polyester or acrilyic cloth. Cotton or other natural fibers also wicks away moderate moisture better.
I switched to cotton and stopped buying deodorant. I only smell "manly" when I've really put in a hard day's physical labor. Cotton socks work well for foot odor and moisture, too.
