Of course it needs to be horrible as it needs to generate the greatest amount of pity... He went through all of this for us... so we'd better do as the institution suggests. To not do so in the face of that selfless suffering "should" make one writhe in guilt.
I've never been able to follow a God that a) I should fear and that b) would do this to his "only son" so that we can feel better about ourselves...
