I'm a native North Carolinian, and I honestly wouldn't care too much to live in Charlotte. In NC the places I'd pick would be Asheville (biased as it's where I grew up) or the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, also known as the Research Triangle. The North Carolina coast/Outer Banks is gorgeous, but you have serious hurricane issues and there's not much of an economy there apart from tourism...
