When my modem was down, I went out and picked up Far Cry for $10, was a great buy.
If money isn't an issue, Half-Life 2 Silver Edition will get you HL2, along with HL1 with expansion packs, Counterstrike Condition Zero (which has single-player CS), and the online new and old CS.
