By pitch you mean 'ball'. The ball is 'bowled' and there are 6 balls in an 'over'.
The player batting doesn't have to hit the ball to get any runs, they just have to make it between the stumps without being 'run-out'.
Basically you get one run for each time you run between the stumps, 4 runs for hitting the ball over the boundary and 6 runs for hitting the ball over the boundary without it touching the ground. (What you might consider as a 'home-run' )
