keep in mind, that a lot of this will vary by person, but this is my experience.
typically, anal is more different than alike compared to vaginal. however, this can vary depending on positioning. anal with my partner behind me provides a completely different sensation than vaginal with my partner facing me--but anal with my partner facing me is actually quite similar to vaginal in the same position. (i would guess this has something to do with the fact he's stimulating the rest of my body in similar ways.)
anal is much tighter, so the physical sensation of something in me is much greater than what i get with vaginal sex. i also really enjoy that first thrust during vaginal sex--the sensation of my partner pushing into me and my body stretching to accomodate him. with anal, that sensation is stronger and lasts for several thrusts rather than just the initial one.
it's not the same, but to give you an idea of what i mean, pucker your lips together very tightly and push your finger into your mouth. you natural reaction once your finger is in, is to relax you lips to accomodate it. even relaxed, your lips are warm and clingy around your finger--you can feel the finger entering your mouth, but once your lips relax after that initial push it isn't nearly as tight--that's vaginal. now curl your lips inward around your teeth and push your finger in. your lips don't relax as much because you are pushing them against your teeth, so your lips still feel really tight with your finger pushing in and out. that initial tightness and feeling of something entering your mouth remains--that's anal.
