Lasereth, were you involved with any guilds that used Dragon Kill Points (DKP) as the method of loot distribution? They're far from random.
Basically you earn points by showing up for raids on time and killing bosses. Once you've accumulated enough points, usually over the course of several raids, you can use them to 'buy' an uber-drop and get it without having to roll on it (unless more than one person has the DKP required to buy it, but even if you lose in such a situation then the winner will be weeks behind you if you were roughly equal going into it).
You need a consistent raiding group to pull it off but a DKP system is a good way to ensure that everyone at the same level of participation gets roughly the same rewards. I can't imagine random-rolling vs. the other 5-odd shamans that are regularly in my guild raid for my MC gear.
