spindles, you're right about game show contestants, but as far as i'm aware, the housemates are not considered game show contestants since they receive a weekly appearance fee. they also have to appear at big brother events after the show (or after they are evicted).
therefore, since they are kind of 'employed' by the big brother group (endemol i think), the final housemates winnings are taxed to the hilt.
i remember there being some stink about the first series winner only receiving about half of the winnings after his tax was deducted (remember that the prize money used to be $250,000).
and i also remember that smirky bastard eddie maguire promoting his show by announcing that the winners on millionaire aren't taxed like *some other shows*.
