Best Buy is supposed to honor the warranty from the day they sold it to you, new or used. If HP is sending you something, I would actually just disregard it, as you bought it from Best Buy, not HP.
As long as you have your receipt from Best Buy, you should be ok. If you bought it new and it actually was used, I would take it up with one of the store managers and see what they might do for you. Did they give it to you at a reduced price?
I worked as a Service Manager for Best Buy for three years and quit just over a year ago, so I know how things work at that company. Go over to the Geek Counter or Customer Service and ask to speak with a manager. Be polite to them and just explain your position. Trust me, with all the shit that goes on in a place like that, all they need is another irate customer. When I worked there, we were more linient to the people that asked for things instead of demanding and also to people who were calm and not rude.
Best Buy (and other retailers) have what they call DEVO. Most laptops under the 1yr warranty (from date of purchase on your receipt) will be exchanged for something comparable if they find your unit has a fault. They will give you another laptop, and send the old one back to the mfg. They will take care of anything after that.
