Ha! Over the years I've only ran into two other people who didn't wrinkle their nose in disgust over the practice.
I think everything goes with mashed potatoes. It's like the skeleton key of down home cuisine.

My uncle is the same way. Fried potatoes, corn, mac & cheese, pizza, Doritos... His Heinz budget must be astronomical.
