while Depp played him as crazy as he possibly could, Wilder's potrayal of Wonka reaches another level of insanity/genius which cant be touched just by acting goofy and childlike. Thats what made the original movie so good to me, and a little spooky too.

It's a different movie tho, closer to Roald Dahl's story.
What would have been great is to have had Gene Wilder, instead of Christopher Lee, play Depp's father.
Deep Roy was great as all the Oompa Loompas.
