Thank you for this very well written piece.
I especially want to thank you for talking about hard work and how the body fights depression.
As a part time coach myself, i've seen my share of "geniuses" of sports. Many of them don't put in the hard work, and even though they were excellent when they first started, they quickly became 2nd rate players.
And the same thing can be said for a lot of the kids I see nowadays. They look at training as a time to socialize with other teammates and have a good time. That isn't training. Training is pushing your body to improve yourself, no matter what it is. Interestingly enough, these kids wonder why they get their asses handed to them once they hit competitions
As for the body fighting depression. I only learned this in march. I REALLY wish someone had told me this before. I've spent almost all my life being heavily depressed. Unfortunately, very very few people have been able to notice it (or maybe, no one around me bothered to notice it), and i've never been able to do anything about it (never knew how to get help beyond calling kids help phone, which i never did). But once i started working out, i wouldn't say i was instantly cured, but in these past few months, I have thought about killing myself ONCE. As opposed to say... once a month. I still get depressed once in a while, but it doesn't last as long, and usually isn't as severe
Thanking you again.
