Spoiler: The trial was for the release of Joe Chill, the murdurer. He was sentenced and imprisoned between the time we see Bruce as a boy at his mansion hugging Caine and when he comes back as a collegian. Bruce came back for the release of Joe Chill - released for ratting on Falcone - when he was in college (Yale) to represent his family. It was a flashback.
