It's not really the bands that set the prices, it's the promoters and ticket agencies like Clear Channel's Ticketmaster.
Bands (like the Stones, Eagles, Who etc.) get paid the same at every show, the promoter and ticket agencies then determine how much each seat would have to be sold for to make a profit. In cases like the Stones, promoters know they can demand exorbitant prices.
Say the Stones get paid $1 million/ show the venue holds 28,000, the average seat costs $35. Promoters look at that and sell tickets for 3-4 times that and make a huge ass profit.
Personally, although I am sure they put on a great show, with Charlie Watts having been sick and at their age they just aren't worth it to me. The Stones to me haven't made any truly good music since Brian Jones was in the band. They are about as money grubbing as McCartney and I wouldn't give Jagger or Richards a cent of my money for what they did to Brian Jones.
Now if the Stones can resurrect Brian, I'll go.
