I tape the weekend omnibus edition for a friend that moved to Miami... can't say that I watch it though.
The lag has to do with when the show gets licensed in the country in which it is being broadcast. If Canada had started licensing the show when it first went to air in the UK they would likely broadcast day and date (ie at the same time) as the UK broadcasts.
However, they likely started to license the series only after it had had some success in the UK (ie a good year or two of production). They would start running the series from the start rather than in mid-stream which would put them a year or two behind the UK in storyline.
