Did the creators only make the 12 volumes? There obviously is a strong following, but did it only last for a few years and then died? If so, I was wondering how come the comic didn't continue. The stories (including spinoffs) for most of the mainstream superhero comics usually span decades.

It's a limited series, concieved as a single story from the beginning and broken up into 12 installments. Don't think of it as a serial like most comics, but as something similar to Dickens' later novels being serialized in the newspaper one chapter at a time.
Oh, and don't skip over the text portions at the end of each section; they're vitally important to understanding the story in depth.
Also, if nobody's ever done this, here's a fun thing to do with chapter 5. Lay it flat on a table. Hold the pages together, and let down one page at a time from each side, ie 1 and 28, 2 and 27, and look at the layouts you have. Now think about what the title is, and who the featured character is.
