She woke, had she been asleep long? She did not remember drifting off. She had been conversing with an old friend about the things that might have been. Slightly embarrassed, she called out. "Ilana, are you still here?"
Ilana entered the room with a pot of hot coffee. "Ah, I was beginning to wonder how long you'd be out, we have covered much this evening."
I couldn't remember much of our discussion.. although I knew that there was much to prepare for.. so much time had passed, and I was amazed that I hadn't prepared earlier. How could I have forgotten? Finishing my cup, I was eager to start. Ilana had moved to the kitchen so I was free to collect my things.
It was dusk as we stood on the sidewalk. I looked back at the house, at the life I once knew, and wondered how had I become numb.. to the extent of losing myself in amongst all the things that now seemed so trivial? Ilana touched my arm as a signal that it was time. She felt my hesitation as I looked into her eyes. She answered as if reading my thoughts, "Sorry, we can't insure you for a journey like that." I could tell from her expression, she knew what lay ahead.
I felt a jolt, then at once I was back on my couch. I reached for a glass that was on the coffee table and noticed my hands trembling. Nothing would be the same, this all seemed so pointless. What was I meant to do now? I felt like I should know but I was pressed for time. As I collected my keys and made way for the door, her picture caught my eye. Pushing the tears back, I wondered, what was I going to do now that she was gone.
