It seems to be, to me, this stems for a lack of education rather than purely a "better safe than sorry" approach. It will be sometimes hard to identify the items passengers carry on a plane due to the wide diversity of the passengers. Then again, bombs have been placed into everything from suitcases to pens. I'm with you though lurkette, I can't seem to figure out why this caused them to land the plane AFTER they saw the items.
