I haven't used an actual acrobat alternative, but I have used speed up programs similar to WillyPete's suggestion and have been pleased.
There's also a slimmed down version of acrobat out there for download (no third party programs
).... I can't remember it off the top of my head, but I'll look for it and post accordingly.
