definitely the best place to start is by measuring the space available for each appliance. it's very easy to go to sears and see all the choices, pick one out that you like, and have it be too big for the space available... this is especially true with refrigerators.
i don't know what your living situation will be... house or apartment, short term or long term... but in my opinion that would dictate how much i'm going to spend. i'd definitely shell out more for a nice set of appliances if i was moving into a house on a long term basis, but if i were moving into an apartment with a short term lease or an undetermined amount of time, i'd probably get just enough to get me by. that way if you need to move far away, you won't feel bad about selling them cheap and leaving them behind... or if you move into a house, they'd get you by until you could get something nicer, and you could use the cheap fridge to store extra meat and stuff like that.
