Gay marriage is a complicated issue.

First, we should look at what the founding fathers (and mother) thought of it. While Jefferson was notoriously against it, there are rumours that Washington and Franklin where quite in favour of such a more perfect union. And Secord, the founding mother of the USA, is widely bellieved to be homosexual by the lesbian community.

Gay and Lesbian marriage also played a part in the revolutionary war and it's aftermath. From the love triangle that triggered Lincoln's assasination to the relationship revieled in grant's and lee's letters, the issue of homosexual marriage is a core part of American idenity.

Going back further from there, it was the philosophical position of the great Greek thinkers that true love could only occur between equals. It was also the case that females where considered intellectually inferiour -- as such, true love in Greece, the foundation of the western intellectual and theological heritage, was restricted to be between two men.

In more modern times, homosexuality has been dangerous. Homosexuals who tried to live with each other where burned at the stake during the Salem phase of the McCarthy communism trials. Less extremely, many homosexual women wherevideo taped, and their acts broadcast in foul exploitive manners, for the gratification of the normative heterosexual male.

The issue of homosexual marriage came to a head in the Roe vs Wade case. Two people, joined as one, and one no longer wished to support the other -- a form of divorce, but considered legally distinct from normal heterosexual divorce. Roe vs Wade actually reduced one of the participants in the particular union to a non-person, simply because of the nature of the relationship!

As you can see, homosexual marriage has come a long way since the days of the Revolution. The only true way to respect our gay heritage is to allow homosexuals to marry -- anything else would be unAmerican!
