In addition to all the encounters with the cult of the personality during my youth (I had many opportunities to meet people then), I met John Nash at a conference on game theory. However, I didnt' realize who it was until after I had finished my conversation with him and one of my friends said something to the affect of "Wow, you got to talk to John Nash, what was it like?" He seemed like a perfectly normal (for a mathematician) old man to me.
