xpdf does in fact do things like text selection, etcl. I've never tried the newer version of Acrobat on Linux; so far xpdf is light enough and functional enough to fulfil all my pdf requirements.
Here's a link to a page which has all the xpdf commands, such as text selection, on it. A lot depends on using the key-bindings, which, if you just print out next to you, become much faster than the mouse!
