I'd assume it's because our medical system was founded by a bunch of fucking idiots. It continues for non-religious reasons because nobody among the half of our population that opposes it thinks that infant genital mutilation is a serious enough problem to speak up about.
Don't mind me, I'm still pissed about having no choice regarding whether or not someone cut off a chunk of my wang shortly after birth.
