RADIO SHACK DOES THE SAME THING!
I told them that I do NOT divulge personal information except for the warranty and even then it's only when I USE the warranty. The clerk did not kow what to do when I said this. I added, if you must have my personal information I do NOT want to complete this purchase. The manager very quickly finished the transaction with a minimal amount of interference.
Now I have to keep the receipt.... but that's how it's always been anyhow.
