That's totally going to depend on your job and how cool/uncool they are toward their employees. I know a job I used to work at, I would have gotten fired if I took more than two days off. But my brother works at a union gig that gives him certain number of PAID sick days per year. You might want to call your boss and ask him what the company policy is toward sick days. I know it seems like nonsense, having to get permission from some jackass because you're sick, but that may be what you have to endure to remain employed.

EDIT: and I'm pretty sure that if you were able to get a doctor's appointment, and he/she determined you did have the flu, the office could write you up a short note detailing your illness.
