I don't believe this is correct. I always thought that an officer could search anywhere in the car within reaching distance of your seat, however they need a warrant to check the glove box or the trunk.
To quote the ever-knowing Jay-Z;
" 'Do you mind if i look round the car a little bit?'
Well my glove compartment is locked so is the trunk and the back
And I know my rights so you gon' need a warrant for that"
