It's common but finding a spot is often tough to do. Where I live, most people find a country road, usually at night, that isn't travelled very often. Otherwise, try and find just an out of the way area (unless you are into the public display stuff).
Pointers?? Don't expect to be very comfortable during the process unless you have a full size van. If it's winter, keep the car running. A cold, wet pussy is no fun.
