I haven't been able to find any sorting mechanisms, but I tend to use TUCOWS because they list good applications, rather than just anything people submit.
I wouldn't use download.com, period. They have been bundling "useful" *cough*spyware*cough* applications within the application that are located in their directory.
I've been using Tucows since its inception and have never had a problem with it whatsoever.
