shorter answer, marriage in front of God is a Medieval creation, before the late Middle Ages marriage was a private act between the husband, bride and the brides family. Everyone sat down around the table, had dinner and then ownership of the girl was transferred to the new husband.
God came into marriage in the christian world because of a resurging Papacy who wanted to assert more control over the various peoples.
You may have no problem with granting some rights to gay couples, but 8 of the 11 new hate amendments specifically restrict any of these rights from a gay couple. Literally, it's terrorization.
