Not patching Fallout as soon as I installed it. I played for three weeks with damn near 15 minute loading times until I found out that there was a patch that cut the time down to less than a minute. And then when I did install it it invalidated all my saved games, ughhh. Luckily that game was so good that it was worth goin back and replaying again and again.
Probably the dumbest actual in-game thing I ever did was one time while playing Day of Defeat I jumped over a sandbag barrier and immediately hit the 'prone' key to go down flat on my stomach. About half way dropping to the ground I panned the screen around and saw 4 players from the opposite team crouching in the back of the mg nest. I proceeded to get beat to death by four shovels (the melee weapon for that team). When ever you see the little shovel or knife kill icon in the corner of the screen you know someone screwed up royally.
