I'm old, and keep some spare bricks (red masonry), a small bag of mortar, a few loaded sandbags (handy things, those), a couple of sealed battle packs of appropriate ammo, and a bunch of loaded spare magazines for the appropriate "car gun", and the serious body armor/pasgt helmet/gas mask type stuff that I don't wear daily. I also keep road flares, a couple of dozen ultra-bright cyalumes, and a "first aid" kit capable of dealing with most emergencies up to a gunshot wound, stored in a sealed, sterilized .50 cal ammo can. If I'm expecting trouble, I throw in some heavy stuff.
My wife has the same kind of first aid kit, road flares, ammo, magazines, and children's toys/supplies. She refuses to carry body armor.
